Amazon is removing the option to download Kindle Book to your computer and here is what you need to do!
You have until 26th of February 2025 to backup all your books
I love reading! I used to buy tons of books, my shed is full of them.
Then Amazon came with the Kindle, and the promise of having thousands of books in a device that weighs less than the average weight of books I have is too much to resist.
I gave up my idealistic view of owning a physical book and went all in on the DRM world!
So far I was happy and content because at least Amazon let me download the digital copy of the book I bought - yes it’s still DRMed - so I could back it up in my ‘digital shed’ - A.K.A anywhere I want to back it up.
That is until I saw this announcement!
This little ‘notification’ made me realise that we don’t own these books - not really - we just buy the rights to read them!
On the other hand, I can understand why Amazon made this decision.
Yup, you’ve guessed it right!
It’s to stop piracy.
Because, even with DRM in place, people found a way to circumvent it - it’s just how this world works - action vs reaction.
What do you need to do?
Well, if you care about having a digital backup of books you bought then you have until the 26th February 2025 to download all of them!
Unfortunately, you have to do this one book at a time, there is no other way around it.
Ok, I lied, there is a way to do it in bulk, but you need some technical know-how to get it done. But just in case you feel especially challenged, check out this Amazon Kindle e-book Bulk Downloader.
For the rest of us ‘mere mortals’ - here are the steps on how to do it manually:
Log in to your Amazon account on the desktop web browser.
Go to ‘Your Account’ → ‘Manage Your Content and Devices’ page where you should be able to see the books you bought.
For each book, drop down on the ‘More Actions’ button.
Choose ‘Download & transfer via USB’.
On the popup panel, choose your Kindle device, the older the better. Then click on the ‘Download’ button.
Your book should begin to download now.
Please consider sharing this post. I’m sure there are other Kindle users out there who could benefit from this information.
